A few people have asked me where do I get my ideas from. I kind of touched on this in a previous post however I thought I might elaborate a little further. It is true that I dream a lot and quite often what originally seems to be a simplistic dream can in fact act as a doorway of the imagination. I know, sounds a little weird but please bear with me.
An idea becomes so much more when you add details like characters with background or possibly what happens next after a specific event? Fleshing an idea out often transforms it into a full story. This isn’t always the case however it does seem to work most times.
The story for Balance grew out of a single dream, which ended up being one event in the book. The rest of the saga spawned from that event and now its the seed to this massive trilogy of epic proportions! I won’t give anything away but some of my characters in Balance are seriously cool and hey I really dig them. How cool is that?
I guess what I’m trying to say is I have yet to experience some magic instant intuition, an all seeing eye which will lead me to the next Harry Potter (yeah right) and really I doubt a complex story will ever just pop into my head, all packaged up and ready to write.
It takes work and lots of thinking time.
My ideas start as little seeds and they gnaw away at my subconscious until the majority of the pieces fall into place. Add a little character depth and eventually, note the time lag factor here, its a complete story.
Quite often when I speak to people my conversations go all over the place.I tend to find myself thinking hey that would make a great book whenever someone mentions something interesting! Perhaps I am just a little more sensitive to these things or my imagination is permanently fixed in the on position…
