During this week someone suggested I simply had to watch something on television as it was quite remarkable. At the time I was at work and kind of busy. In the past, during things like the terrible events of 9/11, I’ve always been glued to the set like a moth to a flame.
I hesitate to admit but its true, on occasion I’ve sat up all night watching the US television networks and their fascinating live feeds. This week it was the Chilean miners being brought up to the surface. Don’t get me wrong, I think that is fantastic, however do I need to celebrate the experience with them by being glued to my TV?
I for one no longer think so.
You see I have limited capacity. In IT terms, yes I just had to go there, my memory is limited and my hard drive can only cache so much. Oh dear. Anyway, my point is as I have said before I work full time and have a pretty busy family life. I’ve recently embarked on a bold new exercise regime, swimming 3 times a week and I have more books to read right now then time to do so.
In amongst all this I am burning to get my editing done. In short my life is running at capacity. I’m cool with this as ultimately it’s my decision to make it so. My brain, as it does its subconscious thing on my characters, is also flat out. I’m trying something new and using my whiteboard in my study to float idea’s in and out. It seems to help to get them written down, this adds some order to my chaotic thoughts and hopefully the books will benefit from this.
I’m sorry miners, I really am but my project came first and that night I didn’t turn to whatever channel you were on. I hope you don’t mind and good luck.
In other news, today I finished Duncan Lay’s ‘The Dragon Sword Histories’ trilogy. I have mentioned these books before so I won’t go into any detail, suffice to say this is a fresh feeling trilogy with very life like characters. One of my goals at the moment is to flesh out some of my characters in Impatience, I couldn’t have read this at a better time.
If you like fantasy, go buy this trilogy, nuff said!
Hi Ja,
A very interesting blog entry. I have come to believe that we’re so bombarded with information every day, most of which isn’t directly relevant, that one has to make a conscious decision to limit it. “What interests me”? and “Did I really need to know that”? are pertinent question. My latest one has been the Aussie media’s obsession with politics. The news about it is either depressing, enraging or dead boring (to me) so lately I have made a decision not to tune into it. When I get into bed tonight I’m gonna read some Stephen king and escape another place. Much better.
Gotta say, I don’t know how you do it tho – juggling full time work, busy family, exercise AND writing…
